What Jobs are Available in the Law?

In addition to law enforcement jobs, there are many ways in which a person can have a career in the law, whether as a main player in the system or in a supporting role.

There are numerous ways in which a person can work in the legal system, whether it be on the front lines of a courtroom battle or in one of the support roles that are necessary for making the legal process work. Lawyer
There are many ways to practice of law. Many lawyers have a “paper practice” or “office practice,” meaning that the bulk of their work is paperwork performed in an office. Other lawyers may choose to be trial lawyers or litigators. A litigator is an attorney whose primary function is to argue cases in a courtroom. In reality, most trial lawyers spend more time in the office than they do in a courtroom, but the work they do in the office is geared towards preparing their case to present in front of a judge and/or a jury.

Judge
A judge’s job is to interpret and apply the law to disputes presented in court. In some situations, the law may be clear, but in other cases, the facts can require significant legal research and analysis to decide how to correctly apply the law. A judge must be well-versed in all areas of law that fall within his jurisdiction, as well as the applicable rules of evidence rules and procedure.

For this reason, it is best for a lawyer to have years of experience in the courtroom prior to attempting to take on the role of judge. It is also important for a judge to be fair-minded, willing to listen to all sides of an issue, and even willing to make rulings that go against his or her own personal beliefs or opinions if such ruling is the correct application of the law.

Law Professor
Law professors are the law school equivalent of college professors. According to experts who write essays for money, a law professor usually has a law degree from a top-tier law school, an outstanding academic record (including membership on his law school’s law review), experience working for a governmental agency or a large law firm, and has published scholarly papers. The competition for positions as a law professor is intense.

University Professor
Some lawyers choose to pursue a teaching career with university students rather than in a law school. This may occur with lawyers teaching in paralegal programs, or those who teach in fields such as business law or philosophy of law. Many lawyers who choose this career path hold advanced academic degrees besides their law degree, such as an MBA or PhD, and they use their law degree as an enhancement to their academic specialty.

Paralegal
A paralegal is a person who is employed in a law firm assisting attorneys with the performance of legal tasks. Some paralegals obtained law degrees but were unable to pass a state bar exam to obtain a law license. More often, the person holds an undergraduate degree in paralegal studies or a related field. A paralegal will be involved in the drafting of most of the paperwork which moves through the law office, and those with more skill and experience will handle more complex legal assignments.

Many paralegals perform advanced legal research for attorneys and draft legal briefs summarizing the law that applies to particular issues. Some paralegals conduct client and/or witness interviews to obtain information the attorney needs to work on the case, and in some cases they may assist the attorney in the courtroom.

Legal Secretary
A legal secretary is the law office equivalent of a secretary or executive assistant. The duties may include drafting correspondence, maintaining attorney schedules and calendars, answering phones and managing communications, billing clients for services provided by the law firm, and performing some of the same duties as a paralegal. In some offices, the distinction between legal secretaries and paralegals is blurry or even nonexistent. This is particularly true in smaller firms, where the duties of paralegal and legal secretary may be combined into one job.

Court Clerk
Court clerks are the individuals who keep the courthouse running. They manage the flow of paperwork into and out of the courthouse, maintain court calendars, provide information to lawyers as well as the general public, and in general handle everything necessary for the court system to provide services to the public. Some work directly for a judge or judges, while others work within specific departments within the courthouse.

Bailiff
A bailiff is a courtroom assistant to the judge. Bailiffs call the courtroom to order when a judge enters or leaves the courtroom, manage the flow of the court files being presented to the judge, deal with lawyers and members of the general public, and usually assist with the running of the judge’s office as well. Sometimes the position of bailiff includes duties similar to those of courthouse security, while other times the tasks are more similar to those of a paralegal.

Certified Court Translator
In recent years, there has been a rapidly growing need for courtroom translators to assist individuals with limited or no knowledge of the English language. The primary need is for people fluent in Spanish, but there is a need for other language translators as well. A person seeking a position should have an academic degree in a foreign language, and should also go through the court certification process for that language. While the number of positions for translators is limited, the number of persons qualified for these positions is even more limited, and a qualified translator will find many opportunities available.
