They laugh at me behind my back.

I know. I've heard them. They don't need to pretend.

They talk about how... unusual I am. Why I act so different...

Why I seem so much... older.

They say I scare them... they think I'm peculiar.

When they ask what I'm thinking in their mocking tones,

I simply tell them I'm in my own little world.

(A hard, trial-filled world in which I have learned to and can still manage to find joy,

But I know they could NEVER survive in.)

I leave that part out.

They take it has they will... a metaphor... not understanding it's reality.

Today one of them came crying to her friends instead of giggling and squealing...

She said that "so n' so had called her hair ugly."

They rallied around her... they cried with her...

She told them she was hurt. For once in her perfect sweet-filled life,

She felt hurt.

I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply, blocking the pain that threatened to spill over...

Controlling it... hiding it...

Just as I had taught myself to do.

On my paper, I lightly sketched my mind's silent words...

"Honey, you don't even know what 'hurt' is..."
