Miller, the A's closer, wins his first-ever All-Star Game by striking out Ohtani
In his MLB All-Star Game debut, Athletics closer Mason Miller dazzled, striking out the league's top hitter and winning the game Tuesday night at Globe Life Field as the American League defeated the National League 5-3.
Miller's Dominant Performance
In the top of the fifth inning, Miller entered the game and promptly retired the side. Ketel Marte was forced to fly out, and he then struck out Trea Turner and Shohei Ohtani, who had just launched a three-run home run. Turner was gazing at Miller, who threw at 103.6 mph, the fastest pitch ever recorded in the history of the All-Star Game pitch-tracking era (since 2008).
Miller expressed his joy to FOX Sports' Tom Verducci following his outstanding inning. "Hard to not enjoy that with this crowd and these players here. This is what you dream of," Miller stated. Making it clear that he was going to take on Ohtani, he said, "I wasn't giving [Ohtani] one up, that's for sure."
A terrific effort by Miller during his All-Star game caps off an outstanding season. Miller has thrown 39 2/3 innings with a 2.27 ERA, 15 saves, and 70 strikeouts despite the A's troubles. The 25-year-old's performance in the All-Star Game, which showcased his talent on a national platform, is a noteworthy career milestone.
